What is Dysport?
Dysport is a derivative of Botulinum toxin – not to be confused with the bacteria itself: Clostridium botulinum – that works by weakening the muscles that create facial expressions. The treatment relaxes the pull of the muscles by treatment in specific areas, allowing the overlying skin to even out.
Dysport relaxes the facial muscles and prevents them from responding to the nerve impulses that cause muscle contractions. Repeated muscle contractions are the cause of wrinkles that so many people want to eliminate. Overtime, smiling and squinting results in crow’s feet around your eyes, frowning creates lines between your brows, and raising your eyebrows cause transverse forehead lines. Dysport reduces the appearance of these lines by maintaining your natural-looking appearance.
Dysport Treatments Are Quick and Virtually Painless
Each treatment takes only 5 minutes. Depending on your treatment plan, injections may be given in more than one part of the face and/or body at a time. The area is numbed before treatment, and the needles used to administer Dysport are so thin that any discomfort is minimal.
The most common use of Dysport is for the reduction of fine lines and wrinkles in the upper third of the face. This usually lasts for 3-4 months. We most commonly treat the areas commonly known as the “11”s between the eyebrows, forehead wrinkles, and crow’s feet. We also use Dysport to achieve a brow “lift” and reduce “bunny lines” around the nose.
Less common uses, but just as effective, would be the “lip flip” where Dysport is placed in the lip muscle to turn-up the upper lip, or in the chin muscle to smooth the “orange peel” appearance.
Dysport can also be used for temporomandibular joint pain (TMJ) patients. TMJ patients often grind their teeth causing them to have headaches and/or jaw pain. Dysport is placed in the jaw muscle to relieving patients of their symptoms & may persist for 6-12 months.
Lastly, Dysport may also be used for excessive sweating. Dysport is placed in the underarms, hands, feet, or wherever the patient is experiencing excessive sweating. This treatment usually lasts for up to a year.
You can return to normal activities immediately after treatment. It may take a week or two to see the full effect. Repeat treatments are comparable to your first treatment.
