Introduction to Breast Reduction Surgery

Breast reduction surgery (reduction mammoplasty) removes excess fat, skin, and glandular tissue from the breast to reduce excess volume. Large breasts can make women appear overweight, even when their BMI is within the optimal range. Also, large breasts often attract unwanted sexual attention.

The results of surgery are amazing. Patients typically feel a lot better after the excess weight is removed—with a significant reduction in shoulder, back, and neck pain. Not only do patients feel better, but the breasts are uplifted, shapelier, and look better both in and out of clothing. Another advantage—exercise becomes easier with less chafing and greater ease of movement. You can watch over on internet before and after effect of breast reduction which will help you to gain more knowledge on breast reduction surgery.

Breast Reduction Candidates

Typical candidates for the procedure are women with disproportionately large, heavy breasts that are a source of painful self-consciousness and problems like poor posture and neck and back pain. Patients must be in good health and have realistic expectations for the outcome of the surgery. They cannot smoke for weeks before and after the procedure.

Those patients with significant discomfort may qualify for insurance coverage. Smaller reductions, however, performed only for cosmetic purposes are not covered by insurance.

Your Breast Reduction Consultation

Your consultation is your chance to communicate your goals and concerns, to ask specific questions about your situation, and to get to know your surgeon. Dr. Roth will assess your health to make sure you are fit enough to undergo the procedure. Any additional procedures you may want to combine with a breast reduction can also be discussed at this time.

In some cases, excess fat may be removed through liposuction along with the surgical techniques described below. The exact technique used to reduce the size of your breasts will be determined by your individual condition—your breast composition, amount of reduction desired, and the surgeon’s insights.

Breast Reduction Procedure

After prep, you’ll normally get general anesthesia to put you comfortably to sleep.
The surgery takes two to four hours to complete, depending on the amount of tissue removed. –Most breast reduction surgeries include incisions around the areola, along the breast crease, and from the bottom of the areola down the underside of the breast. Once the excess tissue, fat, and skin are removed, the nipple and areola can be relocated. –Dr. Roth may also reduce the size of the areola if it’s disproportionate or stretched. It’s reassuring to know that in almost all cases, the nipples and areolas aren’t detached from deeper tissue, so sensation is not affected.

The incisions are then closed to reshape the now smaller breast. Dissolvable sutures are layered deep within the tissue to support the newly shaped breasts. Surface sutures, adhesives, and surgical tape close the skin. Though incision lines are permanent, they fade and significantly improve over time. They usually are completely hidden beneath a swimsuit or bra.On the other hand breast reduction without surgery is not permanent.

Breast Reduction Recovery

When the procedure is completed, you’ll be taken to a recovery area for a short period of observation. Your incisions will be dressed, and a surgical bra provided. Unless Dr. Roth thinks otherwise, you’ll be able to go home that same day. He’ll call you the night of the surgery to make sure you’re doing well.D

It is essential to follow all post-op instructions—including wearing compression garments and taking medications on schedule. You will initially experience some swelling and pain which normally resolves between two and six weeks after surgery. During the first few weeks, you will need to rest and avoid strenuous physical activity, especially involving the upper body. The good news is that you can typically return to work within 7-10 days and begin light exercise within days of the procedure. Patients can see initial results in a month or two following surgery. Relief of back and shoulder pain is often nearly immediate.
